Spring is upon us which means it’s time to get out in the garden! Gardening is a great activity for people of all ages with many benefits including physical, mental and spiritual. It’s also a safe way to socially distance if you’re under quarantine, but still enjoy some fresh air and allow yourself to get some sunshine Before you head outside it’s good to know some key safety tips.

  1. Protect your muscles and joints by taking breaks in between your gardening tasks. Gardening should be fun and relaxing so pace yourself. Work for awhile then take a break and relax. Be sure to hydrate and drink cool liquids.
  2. Avoid working in the garden during the hottest times of the day. Avoid gardening between the times of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when it’s warmest outside.
  3. Wear the proper clothing and use sunscreen. To avoid overheating wear lightweight clothing. Also, don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses or a big hat.
  4. Install raised gardening beds, large, tall pots and window boxes on the fence. Raised planters, pots and boxes help keep everything within reach and allows access without kneeling and bending, thus protecting knees and backs.
  5. Purchase gardening tools that are easier to handle. Strong, lightweight tools with rubber handles reduce effort and stress on joints. Also, consider buying brightly colored tools to help keep track of them.
  6. Hire help for the tasks that are too difficult to do. Gardening is a great activity to do with other people; having someone there to help with the heavy lifting can make a huge difference.
